Dua for Protection from Nightmares

بِسْمِاللهِ،أَعُوذُبِكَلِمَاتِاللهِالتَّامَّاتِمِنْغَضَبِهِوَعِقَابِهِ،وَمِنْشَرِّعِبَادِهِ،وَمِنْهَمَزَاتِالشَّيَاطِينِوَأَنْيَحْضُرُونِ.

Transliteration

Bismillāh, a'ūdhu bikalimātillāhit-tāmāti min ghaḍabihi wa 'iqābihi, wa min sharri 'ibādihi, wa min hamazātish-shayāṭīni wa an yaḥḍurūn.

Translation

In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah's perfect words from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His creation, and from the whispers of devils and from their presence.

Context

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this comprehensive supplication to a companion to say when going to sleep. It asks for protection from all forms of harm, both divine and from evil influences.

Benefit

Reciting this dua offers a powerful shield against disturbing dreams and seeks Allah's protection from all potential evils that may manifest during sleep.

اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ، لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ، لَّهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ…

Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth… (Recite all of verse 2:255.)

Before Sleeping — The Three Quls

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ … قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ … قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ

Recite Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq, and Surah an-Nas three times each, then blow into your palms and wipe over your body, starting with the head and face and the front of the body.

بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

Dua for Sleep — Seeking Refuge in Allah's Complete Words

عن عبد الله بن خبيب رضي الله عنه قال: قال لي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "اقرأْ قل هو الله أحدٌ، والمعوذتينِ، حين تمسي وحين تصبحُ، ثلاثَ مراتٍ، تكفيكَ من كلِّ شيءٍ". رواه أبو داود والترمذي وقال: حديث حسن غريب. وأحمد والنسائي. وصححه الألباني. (وهذه الآيات هي سورة الإخلاص وسورتي الفلق والناس)

Recite the chapter 'Say He is Allah, the One' (Al-Ikhlas), and the two seeking refuge chapters (Al-Falaq and An-Nas) when you enter the evening and when you enter the morning. Recite them three times each, and they will suffice you against all harm.

Dua for Sleep — Allahumma 'Aliman al-Ghaybi

اللَّهُمَّ عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ، فَاطِرَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ، رَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَمَلِيكَهُ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي، وَمِنْ شَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ، وَأَنْ أَقْتَرِفَ عَلَى نَفْسِي سُوءًا، أَوْ أَرُدَّهُ إِلَى مُسْلِمٍ.

O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of all things and their Possessor, I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul, and from the evil of the devil and his snares, and from bringing evil upon myself or casting it upon any Muslim.
