Before Sleeping — The Three Quls

قُلْهُوَاللَّهُأَحَدٌ…قُلْأَعُوذُبِرَبِّالْفَلَقِ…قُلْأَعُوذُبِرَبِّالنَّاسِ

Transliteration

Qul Huwallahu Ahad … Qul a'udhu bi-Rabbil-falaq … Qul a'udhu bi-Rabbin-nas

Translation

Recite Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq, and Surah an-Nas three times each, then blow into your palms and wipe over your body, starting with the head and face and the front of the body.

Context

This practice, deeply rooted in the prophetic tradition, involves the recitation of the three "Quls" – Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq, and Surah an-Nas. As narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would perform this ritual before retiring for the night. This act culminates in blowing into one's palms and then wiping them over the body, beginning with the head and face.

This supplication serves as a comprehensive spiritual shield, invoking divine protection against various forms of harm and evil, both seen and unseen, throughout the night. It fosters a sense of tranquility and reliance upon Allah before sleep.

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ ٱلْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ ٱلْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ، سُبْحَٰنَ ٱللَّٰهِ وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ وَلَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ وَٱللَّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِٱللَّٰهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ. رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي.

There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things competent. Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah, and there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the greatest. And there is no might nor power except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great. My Lord, forgive me.

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ، رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفَّارُ

There is no god but Allah, the One, the Subduer. Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Almighty, the Forgiving.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي صَعْصَعَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ قَالَ بِاسْمِ رَبِّ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي، وَأَخْرَسْ شَيْطَانِي، وَفُكَّ رِهَانِي، وَاجْعَلْنِي فِي النَّدِيِّ الأَعْلَى "‏ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ أَبُو النَّضْرِ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ نَحْوَهُ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ ‏ "‏ وَفُكَّ أَسْرِي "‏ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ ‏ "‏ اجْعَلْنِي مِنْ أَعْلَى ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ ‏ "‏ وَأَخْرَسْ شِرْكِي ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ ‏ "‏ وَاجْعَلْ لِي بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّ تَرَكْتُ جَنْبِي، وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ، إِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي، فَاغْفِرْ لَهَا، وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا، بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ "‏ ‏.‏

In Your name, my Lord, I lie down. O Allah, forgive my sins, silence my devil, release me from my bondage, and make me among the highest assembly. In Your name, my Lord, I place my side, and by You I raise it. If You take my soul, forgive it, and if You send it back, protect it with what You protect Your righteous servants.
