Ghufranak

Translation

I seek Your forgiveness.

Context

Upon exiting the lavatory, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would recite 'Ghufranak' (I seek Your forgiveness), as narrated in Sunan al-Tirmidhi. This practice is understood by scholars as an acknowledgment of Allah's immense favor in providing ease and sustenance, and a plea for forgiveness for any shortcomings in appreciating these blessings. It is also interpreted as seeking forgiveness for the temporary cessation of explicit remembrance of Allah (dhikr) while inside the bathroom, where such remembrance is discouraged.

Benefit

This brief yet profound supplication fosters a continuous state of mindfulness and gratitude towards Allah, transforming a mundane act into an opportunity for spiritual reflection and seeking divine mercy. O Allah, I seek refuge with Your Noble Face, and with Your Perfect Words, which no righteous person or wicked person exceeds, from turning over the night and the day upon me, and from being struck by loneliness or fear of an enemy.
