Upon Waking — Alhamdulillah alladhi Ahyana

الْحَمْدُلِلَّهِالَّذِيأَحْيَانَابَعْدَمَاأَمَاتَنَاوَإِلَيْهِالنُّشُورُ

Transliteration

Alhamdulillahi alladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhi an-nushur

Translation

All praise is for Allah who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

Context

This profound supplication, narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari, is recited by a Muslim upon awakening from sleep. Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth… (Recite all of verse 2:255.)

Before Sleeping — The Three Quls

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ … قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ … قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ

Recite Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq, and Surah an-Nas three times each, then blow into your palms and wipe over your body, starting with the head and face and the front of the body.

Before Sleeping — Bismika Allahumma Amutu wa Ahya

بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

Evening — Allahumma Anta Rabbi

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ

O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I keep Your covenant and promise as best I can.

يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ، بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ، أَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ، وَلَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ

O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, by Your mercy I seek help — rectify all of my affairs, and do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye.
