Bad Dream — Spitting Left

Transliteration

yanfuthu 'an yasarihi (thalaathan)

Translation

Spit on your left three times. This is done by blowing air with a little spittle.

Context

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this supplication and action to a companion who saw a bad dream. He instructed him to spit on his left three times to ward off the influence of Shaytan.

Benefit

This action is a means of seeking Allah's protection from the harm of bad dreams and the whispers of Shaytan.

When to Recite

Upon waking from a bad dream or nightmare.

O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I keep Your covenant and my pledge to You as best I can. I take refuge in You from the evil I have done. I acknowledge before You Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sin — so forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.
